HALFWAY MARK
Road Tunnel Advances The halfway point in the Lyttelton-Christchurch road tunnel, 3145 ft from either end. was reached on Saturday. This was one year and 17 days after the start of clearing operations at the Heathcote portal site. According to the project engineer (Mr J. G. Smith) there is ‘'no reason to doubt” that the tunnel will be completed by the contract date. January, 1964.
“There is no need to saj how delighted I am that the contractors have made such excellent progress.” the chairman of the Road Tunnel Authority (Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon) said yesterday. "It is most gratifying that this halfway mark has been reached without any major accident. We look forward to the early linking of the tunnel with the pilot tunnei from Lyttelton, and the not so very distant completion of the project, with the same happy record as has been enjoyed up to now.”
