BOWLS Kaiapoi Wins Pairs Title

K. Alley end T. Coup, of the Kaiapoi club, won the Christchurch Bowling Centre'i champion of champions pairs at the St Martina green on Saturday. The final waa a dour atrutale between F. BaxandaU and C. Rowe, of Opawa, and the Kaiapoi pair. The Kaiapoi player* may have had a alight attack of nervea in the early stage* for they could not match the bowling of the Opawa representatives and were down. 7-3, on the sixth head. They rained to bring the score level. 7-7, on the ninth and again on the twelfth. 9-9. A two on the next head to Kaiapoi proved to be the turning point of the game and with delightful drawing Kaiapoi went away to lead 17-11 on the nineteenth head. A single to Opawa on the next head was of little use and requiring a full hand of six on the last head, Opawa lost three shots to give Kaiapoi a very good win. 20- IS. A. Duff and W. Cogswell (St. Albans) began in grand style in the first game against Beckenham. Heavy scoring over the first eight heads by St. Albans gave It a 22-0 lead at thia stage. Beckenham rallied a little but went down. 28-8. with one head left unplayed. K. Smith and J. Rennie (Christchurch) eliminated the Linwood representatives. C. Wilkie and S. J. Snedden. 23-13. A great battle was seen between Opawa and M. Aldwln and M. Muir, of South Brighton. Opawa took an early lead but good bowling on the part of South Brighton gradually brought It nearer Opawa and on the penultimate head the score was level. 17-17. On the last head South Brighton held the shot when Muir, with his second bowl, touched the kitty and shifted it near one of Opawa's bowls to be one down. Rowe then drew a second shot

and Muir with his last was • little wide, leaving Opawa the winner. IS-17. Kaiapoi had a good lead over H. Berry and J. Howataon. of Spreydon, and was 21-18 up with one head to play. On the last head bowls were played with careless abandon and then Howataon. with his last, trailed the kitty for five shots to lose. 21-20. Kaiapoi met Christchurch In the semi-final and led, 10-5. on the fourth head only to have Christchurch score on the next three heads to level the score. 10-10. Kaiapoi forged ahead again to lead by three on the thirteenth head before Christchurch took a 17-13 lead on the seventeenth head. On the twentieth head Christchurch seemed to be sure of a win when it led. 10-10. On the last head Christchurch held the shot when the skips went down to play, but Coup turned almost certain defeat into victory when he trailed the kitty for five shots. Rennie had ample space to draw to save,* but failed and went down 00-18. In the other semi-final a great recovery was seen in the St. Albans pair. After being down 15-5 against Opawa on the twelfth need, they won the next four to level the score. 15-15.
