Mr Helpmann Visits City Mr Robert Helpmann, the Australian actor, who made his first professional stage appearance in Christchurch, visited the city privately during the week-end. Mr Helpmann was a ballet dancer. Today he concentrates on acting and directing. He is a leading member with Miss Vivien Leigh of the Old Vic Company now appearing in Wellington. He was “discovered” as a dancer by Anna Pavlova, who took him on tour through Australia and New Zealand with her as a pupil during 1928-27. Mr Helpmann, who was only 13 at the time, had his home in Adelaide, but he joined Miss Pavlova in Melbourne where his father, a stock and station agent, had taken advantage of a business trip to make the necessary arrangements. Mr Helpmann graduated to professional status with the J. C. Williamson Company. His first engagement was as principal dancer in “Frasquita” with Miss Marie Burke. This particular production opened its Australia and New Zealand tour in Christchurch, Mr Helpmann has recently completed his autobiography, which is due to appear in September under the title “ Between The Lines.” The 45-strong Old Vic Company will leave soon for Latin America, where it will present scenes from Shakespearian plays. In Christchurch, Mr Helpmann stayed with friends, Dr. and Mrs H. R. Donald.
