CYCLING Visiting Rider Falls At English Park
Because the New Zealand amateur championships will begin at English Park tonight, many riders who have been selected to represent Canterbury rode in only a few events at last night's meeting.
A visiting rider, G. Clarke (West Coast North Island) when competing in a handicap event, crashed just before entering the straight. Clarke lost quite a lot of skin. He is to ride number three in the 1960 metre time trial tonight.
The outstanding races last night were the two cash events, the F. C. Williams two mile handicap race and the Althea Fitzgerald scratch race. In the Williams Handicap the scratch rider, D. Swanston, was giving away 420 yards to the limit man. K. Neiman. At the end of two laps the field was in five bunches, with equal distances between each. The bunches remained intact as the race progressed, but the gaps got shorter. The leading bunch slowed up badly after the bell, and D. Swanston moved very fast to bring the rest of the field up to the leaders. Immediately contact was made B. A’Court raced through to the front, but F. Hooper went with him. In the final sprint A’Court faded a little and Hooper went on to win.. E. Gluestein and R. Harrison moved very fast to pass A’Court to take second and third places. The Fitzgerald scratch race was ridden at a very fast pace right from the start. Coming in for the bell A’Court speeded up ahead of Swanston and Harrison. Going into the bottom banking A Court had had by Harrison. Swanston held on him but he was hard pressed by Harrison. Swanson held on to win by a narrow margin, with E. Gluestein third.
