“Nearly Fell Into Arena” (N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. February 15. P. G. Snell, a triple world record holder, believes he could have knocked at least i three more seconds off the 1000 yards indoor record he broke in Los Angeles on Saturday nifiit if he had not nearly fallen over several times Snell, who arrived home last night with M G Halberg and the trainer A. Lydiard. said his first run on boards was “pretty rough" "It was quite an experience.” he said. “I got through the first quarter in a pretty fast 53sec but I kept on misjudging the lean on the comers and several times I nearly fell right off into the middle of the arena “I lost a lot of time on the comers and then, over the last two laps, with something like 300 yards to go. all my muscles ti«i up and I felt as' if I was running up and down in the ,one pla'e” Mr Lydia rd confirmed that Snell could have run the distance as fast as 2min 2sec or 2min 3sec (be clocked 2min 6sec) if he had not been so uncomfortable and slow on the turns. He was quite sure a couple of times that Snell was going to fall right off the boards.
