LEADERSHIP IN SERVICE
Dependence On Recruits Now ( N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 14. The Public Service Commission could not be confident that the quality of leadership in the service would be maintained or improved. the chairman of the commission (Mr L. A. Atkinson) told the Royal Commission on State Services today. “Tlie quality of leadership in the future is dependent largely upon the quality of recruitment today," he said. In recent years the quality and number of juniors recruited had not been of the standard required. “As morale is dependent upon the quality of leadership some fears must be expressed in this matter as well,’’ he said.
“If some means of inducing well-qualified recruits to join the service in greater numbers can be formulated the prospect of competent and vigorous leadership in future decades will improve," said Mr Atkinson.
In the long run the prestige and consequently the morale of the service had to depend on its efficiency.
