PENSIONERS’ FLATS
Waimairi County Plans After considering a plan and cost estimates, the Waimairi County Council last evening approved in principle the provision of pensioners’ accommodation within the county.
The county engineer (Mr J. T. L. Coupon tabled a plan for a block of 24 singleunit flats which could be sited on approximately one acre in any suitable situation.
The county clerk (Mr K. Maclachlani said the council could obtain a subsidy of £19.200 on the estimated cost of £43,577, leaving a loan to be raised of about £24,500 at 3J per cent, interest. With rates, maintenance, and so on, the council would require to obtain a return of £2217 a year, making a rental of £1 15s 7d a week for each unit. An alternative method would be to find the development costs of £6200 from the council's land sub-division account which, with the subsidy, would leave £18.177 to be raised by loan. On that basis, a weekly rental of £1 9s lid would be required.
The council appointed a sub - committee comprising Crs. A. E. Wagner. W. T. Rice and J. H. Reynolds to bring down recommendations on the type of pensioners’ accommodation to be provided and the most suitable site.
