Haast-Paringa Road

Sir.—ln view of the importance of having a road link between Haast and Paringa as soon as possible, I have suggested that a temporary loop road might be made,’“where practicable, following the stock track.” Apparently only the ends of that track would be useful. The remaining distance would call for a length of road comparable with the length often formed on a large farm (or two or three smaller farms) to permit the use of utility vehicles. As farming interests can sometimes justify such backcountry access, it seems not impossible that the interests of New Zealand might justify making a comparable length of temporary road in South Westland. If the costs would be too high for this, then far more urgency should be given to hastening the completion of the main road link Could not the three years be reduced to 18 months? Could more contracts be let?—Yours, etc.. ARTHUR LUSH February 15, 1962.
