PETROL TAX REFUNDS

Payment To Be By Cheque

Petrol tax refunds for vehicles not using public roads will be paid by cheque as from the current quarter, the deputy chief postmaster (Mr J. W. Lincoln) said on Tuesday. Up to now, the person claiming the refund has had to collect it from a post office. Payments for the December quarter will not be affected. The declaration in which the claimant signs to the amount of petrol used for such vehicles must in future be witnessed by a postmaster, justice of the peace, notary public, member of Parliament, public accountant, solicitor, or other pvson designated in the Oaths and Declarations Act, 1957, Mr Lincoln added. In the past it has been sufficient for the declaration to be witnessed by a postal clerk. The new form will be of the same type as the motor registration form, by which a duplicate is made automatically when the top copy is filled in by the applicant. The bottom copy will be returned by the Post Office along with the cheque. In this way, the applicant will have his own bookkeeping record The endorsement of the cheque will act as the official receipt for the payI ment.

I All those who made a I claim for the December I quarter will receive one of I the new forms from the ! registrar of motor vehicles, Wellington. Any who did not make a claim in December may obtain a form by applying to the registrar. The change was made m response to representations from the farming community, who were most concerned. Mr Lincoln added. The farmers found it difficult at times to get into a post office. The change would also benefit the department, since under the present system it was often necessary to send a claimant several reminders before he could be induced to collect his refund. Mr Lincoln asked particularly that claimants should examine the new form carefully before filling it in, to make sure that nothing was missed. Postal officers would be glad to assist.
