Service To Sull-Centre
Long-service silver medals were yesterday awarded to four members of the Greendale sub-centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, for 20 years or more outstanding service to their subcentr and to the society They are Mesdames F. Cullen. E G Early. R. M. Early and M. L. Black.
The presentations were made by the president of the North Canterbury centre (Mrs R. I. Brake) at the centre’s quarterly meeting held yesterday. A report on the Junior Red Cross national leadership course, held at Lincoln College last month, was made by North Canterbury delegates to the conference The realisation of the brotherhood of Red Cross work and membership, and the instructions received on leadership, health and service, had been most valuable aspects of the conference.
One of the young delegates will appear on television to give a report of the conference.
Nine cases of distress had been alleviated with distributions made from the centre’s emergency cupboard since the last quarterly meeting, Mrs Brake said. All were instances of fire loss. One sub-centre had recently given three pairs of blankets, two pairs of sheets and pillow cases for the emergency cupboard. Mrs Brake said the centre's lending library had received a good collection of new and second-hand books, and gifts of money More than 100 persons were now on the lending list. Mrs Brake spoke of the service as a “bright spot for shut-away persons.”
