Swimming FIVE-MAN BID ON STRAIT
Penny Wants To Try Again (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 14. Arrangements for the Maranui Surf and Life Saving Club’s five-man attempt to swim Cook Strait by January 22 next would not be fully discussed until the present season was over, the club chairman, Mr C. R. Mentiplay, said today. One of Maranui’s surf swimmers is W. Penny, who just failed to swim the strait last Saturday. Penny reaffirmed today that he is prepared to have another attempt at swimming Cook Strait this year. He would not say, however, what dates he had in mind.
According to his pilot, Mr A. Hunter, March 2 to 4 are the only dates left.
After that the waters of Cook Strait become increasingly cold.
