CINERAMA FOR CITY
A Christchurch cinema is to be the first in the South Island to have a Cinerama installation. Amalgamated Theatres. Ltd., have chosen the Mayfair Theatre for this triple-projection type of film. It will be some months before adjustments are made to the cinema, although plans have already been drawn for the alterations. These involve the relaying of the floor of the stalls, building of three projection boxes and the erection of a large, curved screen.
A decision on when to begin work has yet to be taken but it is unlikely to be before the end of the year.
This large and elaborate version of cinema requires six large projectors, two in each projection box, and five operators.
The system has been highly successful in large cities abroad and the films shown have enjoyed very long runs. The only other Cinerama in the Dominion
is at Auckland. Christchurch will probably be the smallest city anywhere enjoying this medium of film projection.
