ALLOCATION OF CARS
AA. Proposal Opposed < N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 14. A Wellington Automobile Assoc.ation proposal that the allocation of new vehicles should be taken from franchise holders and made by an independent body was opposed in a motion by the Auckland Automobile Association tonight. The Auckland association agreed that the Wellington solution to the new car problem was not the correct one. Mr W. D. Barclay said that unless a better solution than the present one was suggested the problem should be left alone.
The Wellington proposal was that through the North Island Motor Union the Government would be asked to form a committee, or district committees, to allot new vehicles to buyers with the greatest need.
“Any suggestion that will improve the present situation should be encouraged,” said Mr R W Kemp. Eighty per cent, of the public have no show of getting a new car today.”
The chairman of the Auckland association (Mr G. B Johnston) said that any business firm would give preference to its customers. “The Wellington suggestion would be cumbersome and of no use at all,” he said.
