Magistrate’s Court YOUNG MAN SENT TO GAOL FOR MONTH

“I am sending you to gaol for one month, where you will at least be looked after and kept warm,” said Mr A. P. Blair, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when sentencing Roderick Charles Smith, aged 21, on a charge of being idle and disorderly in Cathedral square on February 12.. Smith pleaded guilty to the charge. Sergeant E. S. Tuck said the accused had been spoken to twice in Cathedral square by a constable. The accused said he had nowhere to sleep and had looked for work but had not been able to find any. The Magistrate told Smith he was to see the probation officer when he got out of prison and the probation officer would try to get him work. BAIL REFUSED “I am requesting bail for my client as he wants to get married on Friday,” said Mr C. B. Atkinson, when asking for bail for Barry James Richards, aged 22, charged with false pretences, to the value of £l2. at Lyttelton on January 24.
