THE GIANT 462-TON SATURN-1 ROCKET as it left the launching pedestal at Cape Canaveral last October. When it becomes fully operational, Saturn will be capable of placing 15-ton payloads in 300-mile-high orbits. Later versions will increase the weight in orbit to more than 100 tons.
