N. Z. TECHNICAL EDUCATION

“Marked Increase In Demand” “There has in recent years been a marked increase in the demand for technical education In New Zealand notably in the main centres.” says the principal of Christchurch Technical College (Mr D. W. Lyall) in his annual report for 1961. He says that the increase has been less marked in Christchurch than for example in Auckland, but it is evident all the same. “The Technicians Certification Authority has developed its new New Zealand certificate course quite rapidly, and certain cross-credits have been established between the New Zealand certificate courses and those of the New Zealand Trades Certification Board," the report' says. “The resultant demand for courses has somewhat overloaded the Technical Correspondence School and has created accommodation problems of one kind or another in the main technical colleges. We have not escaped this altogether and have had one or two difficulties in evening class accommodation. The new extension will do no more than keep pace with demand, without enabling us to replace many of the old huts. The need for further new buildings should be considered early.” the. report says.
