Car Ferry Charges

Sir, —One or other of the •motor unions has complained that the proposed tariff for the conveyance of cars across Cook Strait by the new car ferry affords little reduction on the rates now in force. A small car. one understands, can be transported across the English Channel to the Continent for £3 by sea, or £3 10s by air; and a motor-scooter for as little as 2s 6d by air. Admittedly, the volume of traffic across the Channel is infinitely greater than that across Cook Strait: but the latter, above all else, is an internal highway, and one would have thought that everything possible would be done to facilitate inter-island communications. Perhaps, if the motor unions would only get together and speak loudly enough with one voice they might achieve something to the advantage of their members up and down the country.—Yours, etc.. ILAM.
