VIETNAMESE “PLOT”
Coup Reports Denied (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—CopvrtgM) SAIGON, Feb. 10. An unidentified agent gent the South Vietnam security services into a panic over the lunar New Year holidays with a false story of a plot to overthrow the Diem Government, according to one of the most influential members of President Diem's regime. This source said the Information was offered to the Chief of Security Service on February 3 by a man who apparently wished to extort money for information. This agent told military security of 17 alleged plotters who intended to carry out assassination and gren-ade-throwing during the lunar New Year festival. More than 100 persons were closely interrogated at length but after some time it was found that the agent’s allegations were without foundation.
