NAVY HELP IN BRAWL
Recognition In Court ( N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER. Feb. 12. Public recognition was given today to nine navai ratings from H.M.N.Z.S. Taranaki, who assisted the police in a brawl with seamen in Napier on Saturday night. “The police are indeed grateful for their assistance.” Senior-Sergeant R. D. L. Jones told Mr W. A. Harlow, SM.. in the Napier Magistrate’s Court. “A very ugly situation had developed.” Before the Court, as a result of the brawl, were Bernard Toft, aged 18, and Thomas Markey, aged 22, both seamen on the Roscommon. Markey, on charges of disorderly behaviour, obscene language and two charges of wilful damage, was convicted and fined a total of £2O, costs £6. Toft was convicted and fined £lO for disorderly behaviour.
