ACQUITTAL OF COUPLE
Immorality Charges (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) DURBAN, February 11. A 28-year-oid Indian, Syrub Singh, and his white wife, Charlotte Rose Bloem Singh, aged 22, were acquitted yesterday on charges of violating South Africa's Immorality ' Act by living together in Durban, the Associated Press reported. The act forbids sexual relations between whites and non-whites. The Magistrate, Mr C. P. Cowan, ruled in the Durban Criminal Court that in his opinion the State had failed to prove that Singh was domiciled in South Africa at the time of his marriage, which was ruled to be an essential point of the case. The Singhs were married last December in neighbouring Rhodesia but were arrested for living together in Durban. A crowd of Indians packed the Court for the verdict in this case, which created international headlines. Indians and others cheered the acquittal.
