A New Bridge Every Day
Bridges paid for dr subsidised by the National Roads Board are being completed at a rate equivalent to one new structure every day of each week throughout the year. Last year, on this basis, there were 10 new bridges to spare, or a total of 375. Their overall length was nearly five miles, and they cost more than £2 500,000. These figures were quoted yesterday by Mr A. G. Stirrat and Mr J. B. S. Huizing, to illustrate the importance to New Zealand of bridge design and construction. They were jointly presenting, to the annual conference of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers, the first general paper on this subject heard for many years. Both speakers have spent the last six years on this work and their paper was based on present practices of the Ministry of Works in its capacity as consultant to the National Roads Board.
