Immigration Problem

A senior immigration official told a Hong Kong court yesterday that between 100 and 200 illegal immigrants entered the colony daily from Macao alone. This influx was causing the authorities “great concern." The officer, Mr J. M. Gurney, was asking for a heavy penalty for a Chinese junk master charged with bringing into the colony 43 persons without the necessary visas. The junk master was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment. while 13 of the immigrants—all without documents entitling them to return to either China or Macao and therefore will have to be allowed to remain—were sentenced to four months each,
