Results Of Contest

Sixty-seven awards were made by the judges among 660 garments entered in the national wool awards contest of 1962, sponsored by the Wool Board. Awards went to manufacturers, milliners and woollen millers in the four main centres, Palmerston North and New Plymouth. They covered a range of wool wear from cocktail dresses and evening gowns to hats, ties and informal jackets and cardigans.

The judges awarded 29 gold medals. In their final report on the contest, they wrote: “We would emphasise that to win a gold medal, a garment had to be impeccable in finish as well as showing fashion sense. Those who received gold medals really earned them."

Menswear and women's knitwear were the sections of the contest winning most gold medals. The menswear section was described as outstanding. Styling showed an acute awareness of the latest overseas fashions. The texture of fabrics, pattern and colour interest was “remarkably good and the over-all finish of garments set a high standard.”

The judges praised the softness and styling of the women’s knitwear, particularly the classic styles. Many of the garments entered were described as fully equal to any imported article. The supreme award was won by New Zealand Raincoats, Ltd., Petone, for a man's topcoat. The firm won all four awards made in the topcoat class. One garment in the contest had the distinction of winning two gold medals. Entered by the House of Raymonde, Wellington, it was a black evening gown, which won its class and also that for the most outstanding model garment.
