Boxing STEWART BEATS SCANLAN
Bout Stopped In Sixth Round ( N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. February 12. Clive Stewart beat the New Zealand middle-weight champion. Tuna Scanlan, by a technical knock-out in the sixth round at Atheltic Park tonight. Scanlan, groggy and hurt, was obviously unaware that the fight had been stopped and threw a swing at Stewart and the Australian immediately retaliated. Two bottles hurtled into the ring and the police poured in after them and an interloper. .Quiet was quickly restored. It was thought Stewart would concentrate on Scanlan's body, which he did for the first two rounds, but In the third he caught the Samoan with a tremendous right hook to the jaw. The punch took Scanlan completely unawares and he fell to the canvas Few expected him to rise, but he was on his feet at eight. The Australian stalked Scanlan relentlessly, forced him to the ropes at every opportunity and battered him there Scanlan was to go over four more times but many times he was sagging or squatting helplessly on the ropes as the punches rained in. The bout was stopped at 2min 48sec of the sixth round. The weights were: Stewart list 91b. Scanlan list Sib. The attendance was estimated at between 5000 and 6000.
