HORSES AT PONY CLUB SERVICE

Saddles Decorate Outdoor Pulpit Thirty horses and riders formed most of a congregation at an outdoor church service at Halswell yesterday afternoon. The service marked the start of the Halswell branch of the Christchurch Pony Club’s year. The club held a similar service last year. The riders stood dismounted in a semi-circle around a pulpit made from hurdle parts and a bale of hay. It was draped with a horse cover and decorated with saddles and bridles. The Rev. R. W. Blair, vicar of St. Mary’s Church in the Parish of Halswell-Prebble-ton, took the text of his sermon from the Epistle of St. James, iii, 3. It reads: Behold, we put bits into the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Hillary Crowther, a member of the club, read the lesson. The accompaniment for the hymns was played by Judy Shalder on a piano accordion
