Lawn Tennis Canterbury Beats Hutt Valley, 9-7

After many exciting moments Hutt Valley was beaten by Canterbury by 9 matches to 7 in a representative tennis match at Mitchell Park, Lower Hutt, on Saturday. Canterbury, without the services of L. A. Gerrard and Miss J. Davidson, the national champions, and C. G. Judge, put up a good effort.

G. D. Moss was the only Canterbury man who lost his singles He loot to R. S. Sandilands at 6-8 in the third set. It was a most entertaining game with Moss hitting his best form in the second set.

G. Davidson, at number two for Canterbury, was superior to B. N. Shute. Davidson controlled bis play well in registering a useful win in view of next weekend’s challenge by Canterbury for the Wilding Shield. Hutt Valley evened up the men’s section with two wins in the doubles. The women's matches were shared at 3-3 Miss G. Hirst (Hutt Valley) scored a good straight sets win over Mrs P. Leopold in the top singles.

In the mixed doubles Canterbury was superior and it won three of the four matches played. The last match was played with Canterbury leading by eight matches to seven and it looked as if Hutt would even the matches. C. Spiers and Mrs J. Carr won the first set easily from Davidson and Miss N. Williams but the Canterbury pair rallied strongly and after two tense sets won, 9-7, 9-7. Results (Hutt Valley names first):— Men’s Singles R. Women’s Singles Miss G. Hirst beat Mrs P. Leopold, 11-9. 6-4; Mrs J. Carr beat Miss K. Williams, 6-0, 3-6, 6- Miss J. Beale lost to Mrs E. Campbell. 6-1. 8-1; Miss D. Poole lost to Miss S. Rich, 6-3, 6Men’s Doubles Sandilands and Shute beat Moss and Davidson. 6-3. 8-4; Higgins and Spiers beat Walpole and Thom. 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Women's Doubles Miss Hirst and Mrs Carr beat Misses Williams and Rich, 6-2, 3-6. 6-3; Misses Beale and Poole lost to Mesdames Leopold and Campbell. 8-1, 6-2. Mixed Doubles Spiers and Miss Carr lost to Davidson and Miss Williams. 6-2. 7- 7-9; Shute and Miss Hirst lost to Moss and Mrs Leopold, 6-2. 12-10; Sandilands and Miss Beale lost to Thom and Mrs Campbell. 6-2, 7-5: Higgins and Miss Poole beat Walpole and Miss Rich, 6-3. 4-6. 7-5.

McKinley Beats Laver

McKinley today in the semi-final round of the United States indoor tennis championships in New York Laver beat McKinley in last year’s Wimbledon final. McKinley will meet the United States to-p player, W Reed, in the final. Reed today beat M. Santana, of Spain, 7-9, 6-0, 6-4, 6-4.

Knocked Off Cycle.—Mr Arthur Cunnard. of 60 Buchan street, suffered slight injuries when he was knocked off his cycle by a car in Huxley street about 6.40 p.m. on Saturday. He was treated at Christchurch Hospital and sent home.
