RACING Riccarton Horses Win Hokitika Double

HOKITIKA, February 11. Explain and Ashleigh, which are both Riccarton-trained, were successful in the respective legs of the T.A.B. double on the first day of the Westland Racing Club’s summer meeting yesterday.

Explain was the odds-on favourite for the first leg, the Michael Keenan Memorial Handicap Ashleigh was also first fancy for the Lake Matheson Hack Handicap at slightly better than evenmoney odds The combination's double dividend was £3 16s nr £l.

Explain is a three-year-old filly by Clarification from Kiantor. owned and trained at Riccarton by Mr H O Baker. She was ridden by M J Skelton, who was successful on her on the same course last month.

Explain was fully extended to hold off the lightweight, Volterra, by half a head

Asblejgh is a five-year-old gelding owned by Mr L. L. Bevin, of North Canterbury, and trained for him at Riccarton by G R Pelling Ashleigh gave P J Kempton an armchair ride. The on-course double on the Ross Stakes, won by Rose Command, and the Franz Josef Glacier Hack Handicap. won by Fair Polly, paid £9 7s 6d for £l. Both winners are trained at Wasbdyke by E. P. Corboy Rose Command is owned by Mr R. J Cochrane and Fair Polly by her trainer.

The meeting was held in fine, sunny weather and the course was in splendid order. There was a fair attendance.

Explain reached the front inside the next furlong, but both Volterra and Come On Boy ran her close There was not much between the three of them rounding the bend into the straight with Julloch, Gay Sailor and Hunting Melody following. Explain was forced wide entering the straight, but was in front 100 yards from home with Volterra and Come On Boy challenging strongly on the inside. Volterra appeared to head the favourite immediately afterwards but in a vigirous photo-finish, in which both M. J Skelton, on Explain, and A. H. Eastwood, on Volterra, used thenwhips freely. Explain prevailed by half a head. Come On Boy was a length and a half back third, two lengths in front of Julloch. Gay Sailor and Hunting Melody were beaten off. AH-Tlie-Way Win Ashleigh led all the way to win the second leg of the double. the Lake Matheson Har-k Handicap. Passing the stands for the first time Ashleieh was followed by Totara Lass Master Conclusion and Rajah wi'h Zayton at the rear Ashleieh had increased his lead to four lengths at the half-mile and there was little change in the nositions of those chasing him By the time they reached the straight A Heigh was five or six lengths clear and coasted home to win by four lengths Raiah. which had been successful over six fur’ones two races earlier, outfinished the top-weight.
