SYDNEY EVENT

Perth Fancy Well Beaten

(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) SYDNEY. Feb. 10.

The Inter-Dominion championship candidate. El Tegra. finished second last in the Open Ciass Handicap at Harold Park last evening but is unlikely to lose any admirers for the Championship. Kerryfield. which has become Sydney’s best known “upset" pacer, won the 13furlong and 98-yard race in race record time. El Tegra suffered a severe check at the start when the front marker, Allanah Marie (C. Caffyn) broke and fell back through the field. Allanah Marie seriously hindered El Tegra and Malyandry's Pride, which started from 12 yards.

After the race the trainerdriver, B. Stocks, said: "El Tegra couldn’t get properly balanced after the early setback. When I tried to improve my position, the other runners forced us three and four horses wide, and that was the end of the section." Kerryfield had not won since the £5OOO Spring Cup last October. He revels in a fast pace and last evening the race was run to suit him with the speed on from the outset. Kerryfield won the race by three-quarters of a length from Eden Monraro. with the unlucky Don Ngaree half a head away third. Kerryfield ran the distance in 3 min 32 4-ssec, at a fast mile rate of 2min 6 3-ssec.

The mile rate was two seconds faster than the previous race record set by General Scott in March last year.

Another Inter - Dominion candidate. Rosslawn, finished a disappointing fourth, after having every chance. Rosslawn enjoyed a perfect trail in fourth and fifth positions until it was time for him to challenge the pacemakers. Pacing Lawn and Don Ngaree, at the two furlongs. Rosslawn could not go on. The trainer-driver, A. Phyllis. was disappointed with his performance.

Phyllis said: “Had he won tonight, I almost certainly would have taken him to Perth for the championships. but things are up in the air at the moment.”
