MIGRATION BILL

“Colour Bar Shames U-K.” (NZPA.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 10. The “Daily Mirror” yesterday urged the British Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) to call together Commonwealth leaders to work out a just and humane solution to the problem of immigration and its “colour bar” implications. “The Tories are bulldozing their Commonwealth Immigration Bill through Parliament,” the “Daily Mirror” said. "It will soon become law.

“The one thing that can be said for the bill is that the new laws will last only until the end of next year. That gives the Government exactly 23 months to make a fresh start.

“There is an immigration problem. In Britain it is mainly a problem of housing. In the Commonwealth countries most concerned it is a problem of poverty and unemployment. “These problems can be solved only by Commonwealth agreement on a Commonwealth immigration policy. Not by Tory law based on racial discrimination and steam-rollered through an uneasy Parliament.

“Mr Macmillan should at once promise to call together the Commonwealth leaders and work out a just and humane solution which will rid Britain of the shame of operating a colour bar,” the “Daily Mirror” said.
