TROTTING DANDY BRIAR WINS AGAIN

Rivals Outclassed At Addington

Dandy Briar gained his seventh win for the season when he outclassed his rivals in the President’s Handicap at Addington on Saturday. The President’s Handicap was the main race for pacers and the first leg of the double at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s autumn meeting.

Dandy Briar was very slow at the start and looked to be too far back to be a threat at the end of a furlong. However, the slack pace enabled C. S. Donald to improve with him and he sent him round the field with nine furlongs left to take control a furlong later.

Dandy Briar was then pacing well within himself and was not put to the test in the straight to win by two lengths and a half from Queenson, which shaded Massacre and Meadow Scott.

Dandy Briar, a five-year-old gelding by Garrison Hanover from Aloysius, was a costly failure at the recent Forbury Park meeting at which he failed to begin cleanly. He is now on a fairly tight mark and should not be long extending his record for his Greymouth breeder. Mr J. Steel, who has also enjoyed success this season with Dandy Briar’s halfbrother, Falsehood. Queenson and Massacre both paced sound races for second and third respectively, but Meadow Scott was a little disappointing even though he was a close fourth. He had every chance, but made little impression in the straight

Aerobee. a decisive winner in fast time over two miles at Hororata last month at her previous start, made short work of her opponents in the second leg of the double, the Harewood Handicap. She was a little slow early, but took the lead with nine furlongs left. From then on she was always pacing within herse’f and won most decisively from Guiness. The win favourite. Winona, lost ground at the start. She was second at the six furlongs, but was well beaten a furlong out, finishing near the rear.

The Dandy Briar-Aerobee double paid £36 Ils for £l. The meeting was held in warm weather before a moderate attendance. The track was fast. Totalisator investments oncourse amounted to £73,103, including £7910 on the double, compared with £100,535 last year when the meeting was held on Easter Saturday. First Leg Jonboy Star. Florita. Dandy Briar. Axis, Massacre. Josie Gay, Luck's Way. Queenson. King Anjou, and Seafield Lad gave ground at the start of the President's Handicap Stormont broke a hopple at the end of a furlong and was pulled up. Johnny Thunder began best and set a leisurely pace from Bonnie Lustre. Queenson

passed him with nine furlongs left, with very little quickening in the pace. C. S. Donald took advantage of the lack of pace to send Dandy Briar round the field and he was a clear leader with one mile left. He was closely attended by Massacre at the six furlongs, but was a clear leader racing to the straight, where Massacre, Queenson, Florita. Johnny Thunder, Meadow Scott, Jonboy Star, Bonnie Lustre and Luck’s Way were reasonably handy. Dandy Briar w’as not tested inside the furlong and won easily by two lengths and a half, with Queensoon beating Massacre for second by half a neck. Meadow Scott was a similar distance back fourth with a length to Gildirect, half a neck to Seafield Lad and narrow margins to Johnny Thunder and Luck’s Way, which were clear of Florita. Solid Finish Favoured with a grand run along the rails in the

straight With You, which had had two fourths from seven previous starts this season. gained a decisive if narrow win in the Holmes Handicap.

Merry Nora took the lead from Welburn with one mile to run. Winterlight which had broken several times in the running, was on the outside of W’elburn and just behind Merry Nora racing to the straight with Ahumai, With You, Kennoway, Coronet Lass, and Dianthus Girl next.

Merry Nora was soon mastered by Welbum and then With You obtained an opening along the inner. With You finished in grand style and won well by half a neck. Welburn trotted a sound race for second, two lengths in front of Robert Medoro, which broke at the end of two furlongs. Merry Nora tired to fourth, just ahead of Ahumai, with Coronet Lass.
