FIGHTS AT WAIMATE
Special Court Sitting (N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU. Feb. 11. Fights, disorderly behaviour and alleged driving under the influence of liquor all contributed to the worries of police in Waimate on Saturday evening after the running of the Waimate 50 car races.
How’ever. a spate of accidents which resulted in 11 persons being admitted to hospital—one of them critically injured—kept the police too busy to deal with other incidents reported. Four persons were taken into custody by the police during the afternoon and these were dealt with at a special Court sitting at 7.45 p.m.
Another man who was arrested at about 10 o'clock on Saturday night after an accident in which a car knocked down a section of fence in the town will appear in Court tomorrow morning on a charge of driving under the influence of liquor. The four persons dealt with on Saturday evening were: — Peter Kurinui, aged 23. a workman, of Levin, at present employed by a bridge contractor working near Waimate, was convicted of disorderly behaviour in Queen street, and fined £lO. James William Thomas Harvey, aged 17, a freezing worker, of Timaru. He was involved in a fight which took place in the county yard, being used on the day as the pits for the car racing. On a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner he was convicted and fined £lO. Anthony Keith Marriott, aged 20. a cabinetmaker, of Christchurch, and another Christchurch youth whose name was ordered not to be published. They were arrested at 5.15 p.m. for fighting outside the New Criterion Hotel. Each was convicted of fighting in a public place and fined £5.
