MARSDEN PT. WHARF
Board Awards Contract (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, Feb. 11. The Whangarei Harbour Board has awarded to the Rope Construction Company a £224,950 contract to build the board’s wharf adjacent to the Marsden Point oil refinery, subject to two conditions. These are the receipt of approval of the scheme from the Commissioner of Works, and the tenderer supplying at an extra cost approved by the board’s consultant engineer (Mr F. C. de Wit) solid instead of hollow reinforced concrete piles. Tenders were called only in New Zealand and six were received. The job is to be completed 10 months from the date of acceptance of the contract.
The wharf, will stand about 800 yards up harbour from the refinery’s tanker wharf, will be used for tugs and pilot boats. The installation will have a double carriageway approach 24ft in width and 1183 ft in length. The wharf itself will be 400 ft by 40ft. It will be of pre-stressed concrete and will provide berthage space on both sides. There will be 26ft of water at the berths at low tide.
