“DID SWIM STRAIT”

Comment By Sponsor (N.Z Pres* Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 11. W. O. Penny did swim Cook Strait yesterday, according to his sponsor and the organiser of the attempt, Mr J. A. Young. “When Penny reached the point where he was level with The Brothers Islands he had swum the strait.” Mr Young said tonight. “He just did not comply with the land to land requirements.”

The freak rip which swept Penny about like a matchstick was phenomenal. Mr Young said. The expedition's guide, Mr A Hunter, took the swimmer with the tide throughout the attempt. The rip—direct cause of Penny’s failure—came from nowhere. A fisherman at the spot at 8 p.m. today reported that the rip was clear and the sea calm. Mr Young said that if Penny made another attempt he would conquer Cook Strait. He would be prepared to organise the next trip as well. Conditions for another attempt would be right on the week-end of March 2-4.
