A HIGH YIELD
Aotea Goes 95
A fine crop of Aotea wheat has been reported from the Southbridge district. Off 18 acres on the Beachcroft property, which is farmed by Messrs R. G. and R. E. Allan, the yield was 95 bushels to the acre.
The wheat crop followed a crop of garden peas last season which yielded better than 75 bushels to the acre. The wheat was sown in early June at about 1 l-3rd bushels to the acre with iy«cwt of superphosphate to the acre. At sowing the ground was so heavy the tractor could barely pull the drill. Mr R. G. Allan said that the crop was grown on country which comprises a free sandy loamy clay to a depth of 6ft over shingle and water. The crop was not irrigated and in a damp season it was likely that it would not have been so good. A factor that benefited the crop, however, was the higher water table recently as a result of the Rakaia river running on the north side of the island and causing a creek on the property to rise 2ft this summer.
On the same farm a crop of Aotea that yielded better than 100 bushels to the acre was grown about three years ago.
This season between them the 95 bushels to the acre crop of Aotea and two paddocks of Arawa averaged just under 70 bushels to the acre.
