New Wheat Varieties
New mildew-resistant Hilgendorf 1961, yielded 74 bushels to the acre under trial in South Canterbury this season, according to a preliminary report on trials in the district issued by Mr R. C. Schofield, senior farm advisory officer with the Department of Agriculture in Timaru. The trials were under the supervision of Mr C. C. McLeod, a farm advisory officer. Mr Schofield said that in the same trial Aotea yielded 79 bushels and Arawa 86 "With the premium for Hilgendorf it appears to be on a par with both Aotea and Arawa.” he said. Where the new and old Hilgendorf were compared the old Hilgendorf yielded 57 and the new 83.
Mr Schofield said that over a number of trials this year mildew-resistant Cross 7 'Cross 7 1961 ) had averaged the same as Aotea. There were about 6000 bushels of mildew resistant Cross 7 available for sowing in South Canterbury this autumn. Hilgendorf 1961 would not, however, be available for sowings until next year.
