ELLESMERE’S BREAD
Supply From City In Future
Bread for the entire Ellesmere district will, as from Monday, be supplied by two large Christchurch bakeries. Leeston's last remaining bakery, Free Bros., ceased baking yesterday largely because of a shortage of staff.
The firm of Free Bros, has been supplying bread in the Ellesmere area for the last 30 years and although its baking operations will cease, the firm will handle the supply from the city bakeries. Until about seven months ago there was a second bakery in Leeston, but when the proprietor died the bakery side of his combined bakery and butchery firm was discontinued, and a city firm took over the supply. Mr Free said the closure of his bakerv was “just one of those things." There was the cost of mechanisation and the shortage of staff to consider, and both these were taken into account before a decision was made.
