Westport Beat 1961 Champions

( N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, February 9. Westport was the outstanding team in the New Zealand women’s fours championships at Hamilton today, beating Mrs M. Nicol (Marewa) and Mrs M. Butts (Paraparaumu Beach) to reach the semifinals.

Both defeated players were national champions last year. The match against Paraparaumu Beach was one of the best of the day. Westport led, 5-2, on the third end, and on the sixth, after Paraparaumu drew a toucher, Mrs Butts wicked-in on a front bowl to take the shot, bringing the score to 7-5. Both teams played steady draw and after 18 ends Westport led, 19-16. On the next end Paraparaumu threw a long head, eventually drawing in for a shot with a second bowl, making the score 19-17.

The final end saw Westport draw a toucher which was protected when Mrs Butts drew a second shot. Although Paraparaumu Beach skip tried to rest the shot, she was unsuccessful.
