CANTERBURY BRIDGES
Work Begins Next Week
Two Canterbury bridge contracts will be begun on Monday; one on State Highway No. 1 near Telegraph Gully, the other on Highway 73, the Arthur’s Pass route to the West Coast, near Porter’s Pass. Both contracts were let by the Ministry of Works.
The first involved the replacement of the timber bridge over the Greta stream at Motunau, by an arch culvert. There will be a halfmile deviation from the course of the present highway to the new crossing a little upstream.
The contract completion date . is march next year. Burnett's Motors, Ltd., Ashburton, is the contractor. The second contract is for a 125 ft bridge over the Kowai river, a tributary of the Waimakariri, near Springfield. Work there also involves the extension westwards of sealing on the road. Sealing is now being laid for three miles on the east side of the river and a contract has been let for sealing a further two miles to the foot of Porter's Pass.
The bridge will have four 30ft pre-stressed concrete spans which will be cast in Christchurch. This bridge is due for completion by August.
