FALSE ACCOUNT OF ROBBERY
Tahuna Manager Sent To Gaol ( N.Z. Pres* Association) NELSON, February 9. Norman William Street, formerly manager of the Tahuna motor camp canteen, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on a charge of giving false information to the police about a £2300 robbery at the camp on January 2 in the Magistrate's Court today. Street pleaded not guilty before Mr J. A. Nicholls, S.M. He was represented by Mr R. A. Fletcher.
The Magistrate said he was convinced Street was putting on an act. Whatever his motive, which was perhaps to defraud his creditors, it was a dishonest one. The fact that the case which was supposed to contain the stolen money had been found on the back beach half an hour before Street alleged it had been stolen convinced him that the statement was untrue, the Magistrate said. Mr Fletcher said it was clear that Street had undergone a great deal of strain, and found it difficult to support his family.
