Solicitors Kept From Ceylon Coup Suspects

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

LONDON, February 9. The Ceylon Cabinet has approved an emergency regulation forbidding solicitors to visit the 29 alleged coup plotters now held in solitary confinement, the “Daily Tele-

graph” reported. The newspaper’s special correspondent reported from Singapore that promulgation of the decree followed a petition to the Supreme Court for a ruling that legal counsel should be permitted to visit the detainees as provided by existing laws. About 150 persons are being interrogated by the

Cabinet and service chiefs at the residence of the Prime Minister (Mrs Bandaranaike).

The correspondent said he had flown to Singapore after attempts to cable or telephone dispatches had been thwarted by censors and the Criminal Invesigation Department. He said his hotel telephone was tapped and he was under constant police surveillance while in-Colombo.

No news of the Supreme Court petition had been allowed to appear in the Colombo press. The hearing was continuing.

Coup suspects were being interrogated day and night, said the correspondent.
