FIRE ON PLANE

Passengers on a Royal New Zealand Air Force DC-6B transport, which turned back 300 miles out over the Tasman Sea after fire occurred on the flight deck, today praised the calm control of the commander of the aircraft. Flight-Lieutenant G. C Brown, of Auckland. The aircraft landed safely at Eagle Farm air base after being escorted back by a Hercules of the Royal Australian Air Force, which was diverted from a cou-ier fiight to go to the New Zealand plane's assistance A N“<ntune air-sea rescue plane, which was on stand-bv at Amberley R.A AF. station, did not have to be called on The DC-6B is expected to 'eave for New Zealand at 8 30 tomorrow The 20 passengers, returning to New Zealand from Malaya, are spending tonight in a Brisbane hotel. Flight-Lieutenant Brown said: “We were flying at 19,000 feet when the smoke was first noticed I reported in and then turned back as a precautionary measure " He said he believed the smoke came from a defect in the electrical wiring under the flight deck.
