ELECTION IN FINLAND
Setback For Communists
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) HELSINKI, February 5.
President Kekkonen’s ruling Agrarian Party today won the Finnish elections, depriving the Communists of their role as the biggest single party, the Associated Press reported. Preliminary figures showed that the Agrarians had gained five seats while the Communists had lost two. This would give the Agrarians 52 of the 200 seats in the Parliament and the Communists 48. The Finnish Conservative Party ..Iso seemed to have gained five seats while the Social Democrats, suffering from a split in their ranks, had lost at least five, the Associated Press said. The result meant a clear swing to the Right in Finnish politics and a victory for President Kekkonen’s policy of friendly relations with both East and West. Final figures had not yet been completed, the agency stated.
