TWO INDOOR RECORDS

Pole Vault And Shot Putt

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Feb. 3

Two indoor world records —the pole vault and the shot putt—fell at the Millrose athletics meeting at Madison Square Garden last night A German-bom united States marine, John . Uelses. pole vaulted 16ft Viin. It was the first time that 16ft had been bettered. The previous record was 15ft 9Jin by D. Bragg. G. Gubner, of New York University, broke the shot putt record with 63ft lOViin.

The old record of 63ft l%in •was held by P. O’Brien, of Los Angeles. Uelses had not got over 15ft until a year ago. Some time after Uelses's pole vault, there was some doubt about whether the leap might be recognised as an indoor world record.

A photographer knocked down the cross-bar before officials had a chance to remeasure it, and Mr D. Ferris, head of the Amateur Athletic Union, said it would be up to the AA.U. records committee to decide whether it should be recognised. The rules require re-measurement of all record heights. Ireland easily won the two-mile international relay race, with R. Delaney as anchor man, in 7min 38.4 sec. Delaney ran the last lap in 1-min 53.1 sec, opening up a large lead. Canada was second, 7min 46.65ec, and the United States third, 7min 48.2«ec.
