SWIMMING Good Performances At Linwood Carnival

Swimmers from the Fendalton and St. Albans clubs made a particularly flood impression at a carnival in the Linwood club’s pool on Saturday. St Albans competitors won seven of the 24 events, being particularly prominent in freestyle, and Fendalton club swimmers enjoyed success in several strokes.

A Fendalton quartet of I. Johnson, hia sister Miss C. Johnson, and the Johnston brothers were consistently to the fore during the carnival. The Johnsons each won a 100 yds freestyle race and between them also gained two second platings in breaststroke and a third in backstroke. The Johnston brothers provided good opposition for the former Canterbury and New Zealand champion, C. McFadden, in 220yds and 440yds freestyle races; although McFadden made good his handicap in the longer event he was unable to catch D. Johnston in the 220yds after giving him 12sec start. Freestyle races—which made up half the carnival programme—were dominated by St. Albans swimmers, notably B. Spear and C. Selby, who proved their ability at both 100yds and 220 yds. One of the most creditable times put up in the 25yd pool was Miss H. Broughton’s 2min 48sec for 220yds. It was among her best short course performances.

Miss K. Hubble (Papanui) was probably the most versatile competitor in the afternoon’s swimming. She won a backstroke race and gained second platings in freestyle and breaststroke events. The home club was not without its share of success, and two of its best swimmers, P. Jones, who was Canterbury junior boys’ backstroke champion last season, and J. Plows, a competent breaststroke competitor, were conspicuous in all their races.
