BOWLS 16 With Two Lives After Centre Pairs Start

The Christchurch Bowling Centre’s open pairs tournament was begun on 16 greens on Saturday. In the morning there was little wind and conditions were ideal. During the lunch break rain began but later the weather became hot.

One surprise was the elimination of M. Yugovich (Beckenham) who finished fourth in the Dominion tournament pairs. In his first game he trounced R. Sarney (Avon), 30-9, but was beaten in the second by S. G. McKenzie (Christchurch). Yugovich won his next game against Bowman (New Brighton), 24-22. before W. Halkett (Riccarton) beat him in the last gasne of the day, 16-14. Halkett seemed to revel in close games with tight finishes, for he won his first game, 18-17, lost his second. 25-24. won the third, 19-16, and then retained his one-life in the last game when he beat Yugovich. G. Craig (Canterbury), who skipped the "Sheffield four to fourth place in the Dominion tournament in 1958, came through with two lives. He had a close call in his first game when he beat G. P. Mechen (Burwood) .26-25. H. Deavoll (Sydenham), an Empire Games nominee, was hard pressed in his first game against D. R. Sugrue (St. Martins) and only managed to win, 23-22. He was not troubled in his next three games to retain his two lives. W. Cogswell (St. Albans), who is one of the five surviving two-lifers in the open singles, came through the day unbeaten. His first two games were won with ease, but in his third against R P. Norris (Elmwood) he was hard pressed all the way to win, 24-22. His fourth game presented no problems.

R. A. Croft (Amberley), who has been a consistent tryer in centre fixtures, met with better success in this tournament than he has in the past and emerged unbeaten.

F. W. Fiecken (Tai Tapu) won his first three games, all by narrow margins. In his last game he met R. Main, a prominent Sumner player, and in a keenly-fought encounter went down, 16-14 E. N. Bromley (Christchurch) was little troubled to win four games. S. J Snedden (Linwood), an Empire Games representative and nominee for the Perth Games, won his four with comparative ease.

Of the 256 pairs who had hopes for a centre title. 176 had e no chance at the end of play on Saturday. Sixteen have retained their two lives and there are 64 with one life. Results were:—.
