WATER SPORTS CLUB TITLES

High er Standard Of ski-ing

The rise in popularity of water ski-ing in Canterbury was reflected in the marked improvement in the standard of competitors in the Canterbury Water Sixnts Chub’s championships at the Brookland’s lagoon on Saturday. Water conditions were near perfect, and the final runs by the top slalom competitors were made at 34 miles an hour. The judges were Messrs R. Smith, V. Stewart and G. Baudinet. and the club captain for the dav was the club president. Mr E.’Ruske. One of the most spectacular events of the day was the water jump in which D. Alsop made an outstanding jump of 92 feet, but he was not successful in having this recorded as he failed to recover and fell. Alsop recorded the best jump lor the day at 82 feet. For the first time the club used Johnson jump meters to measure the distances jumped. The towing boat for the jump, a powerful VB. piloted by I Pankhurst, took the senior jumping competitors over the ramp at 35 miles an hour. The junior and juvenile competitors ,vere towed by F. McArthur in his Zephyr powered La Lei. The standard of ski-ing indicated that there will be strong competition from the club titleholders in the Canterbury championships which will be held at the Lakeside Domain on Lake Ellesmere on February 17.
