Resident Counted 50 Near Shore
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 2.
A school of whales, numbering up to 50. was reported to have cruised into Wellington harbour this evening Several residents in the Wadestown area said they had seen the whales come close in to shore near the Hutt road reclamation works at Kaiwharawhara. One resident, Mr R. Jamieson, said he had counted about 50 whales as he returned from work. “I could see the black humps stretched along the shore from the reclamation to the direction of Petone beach.” Professor L. R. Richardson, head of the zoology department at Victoria University, said it would be “remarkable” for such a large number of whales to come near the harbour at this time of the year.
“They were more likely to be dolphins," he said.
