February 4 The United States open golf champion. Gene Littler, has a two-stroke lead as the Palm Springs 50,000 dollar golf classic enters its last round today. Yesterday, with a fourround 270 he shared the headlines with Dick Mayer, who scored a hole-in-one at the 174-second hole of the Tamarisk Country Club. Mayer will receive a 50.000 dollar bonus unless other players also score holes-in-one. in which case he will have to share the prize. Littler took the lead at the end of the fourth round of the 90-hole tournament with a four-under-scratch 68.

The British open champion Arnold Palmer, had a 71 for 273 and Gary Player, of South Africa, had his second 69 in succession for 281. Bruce Crampton, of Australia. was trailing with 295 after a round of 72. In the earlier rounds Crampton returned 79. 70. 74. Mayer carded a 70 for a four-round total of 277.
