Captain Scott

Sir,—The picture of Captain Scott and his gallant party at the South Pole revived vivid memories for me. At that time I was a member of the staff of Radio Wellington. Mount Etako. Tinakori Hills. Mrs (later Lady) Scott was travelling to New Zealand to meet her husband on his return from the south. She was a passenger in the “old” Aorangi on the San Francisco-Raro-tonga-Auckland-Sydney run. I happened to be on duty at the time the Aorangi arrived within wireless communication with New Zealand, and it was my sad duty to transmit the news to the Aorangi The first message dispatched was to the captain of the Aorangi instructing him to break the news to Mrs Scott After that followed many messages of condolence and eulogy. Later the wireless operator on the Aorangi told me that Mrs Scott sat up all night in his wireless cabin anxiously awaiting all news available regarding his tragic ending.—Yours, etc., JH. January 22. 1962.
