Traffic Detour At Ashburton

Work on the approaches to the main traffic bridge across the Ashburton river just south of Ashburton has caused unwelcome disruption of holiday traffic along the Main South- road. With heavy traffic flowing along the road for most of the day, many spectators have been watching the pro-

gress of cars, trucks, and caravans along the detour and through a water race. The 200-yards-long approach is being straightened To allow traffic through a detour along the old stock route on the up-stream- side of the approach is necessary, and where this road is not dust it is mud and water. After skimming along the

smooth straight stretches of the south road yesterday, drivers greeted the rutted detour, with its clouds of dust, and water course lurk ing in the middle in ? variety of ways. Heavy vehicles and some new cars bounced or splashed easily enough across the track and water course. Drivers of older cars and cars pulling

caravans approached .imre cautiously—unsure of the depth of the muddy waiet, wary of the machinery around them, and trying to keep their vehicles clean. All this afforded the crowd of watching children great amusement. All vehicles were muddy and dusty by the time they returned to the clean main road.
